A few days ago I received the periodic circular [1] from IndustriALL Global Union, which I greatly appreciate, in which it reported an anti-union business attack at the Turkish Bekaert İzmit Steel Kord factory . And in it, at the head of the statement from our International and European Trade Union Federation, the statement: “ IndustriALL Global Union and industriAll Europe stand in solidarity with the workers and their union at the Bekaert İzmit Steel Kord factory.” Good, I thought, and continued reading. I expected to know not only the obvious, and easy, denunciation of the business attitude against the workers' demands, salaries on this occasion, but also how this proclaimed "solidarity" was materialized. But I found nothing about it.
And it occurred to me to search on the internet what this company was, described as “European with Belgian capital” in that statement. Because I sensed that, once again, something might be missing in the union initiative of our Phone Number Database International Trade Union Federation (IndustriALL Global Union). Union repression in Belarus: searches and arrests for 'No to war' The surprise is that I found, now, much more than I could have assumed. They were references that IndustriALL should have assumed to establish the appropriate response. This note is about this, and what should follow from it. A note addressed to whom it may concern. It is therefore appropriate to urge IndustriALL organizations on the five continents to connect with the respective work centers of this multinational.
What I found surprised me due to the silence (ignorance?) of the IndustriALL note. I summarize some of all this, of the thousands of reports that can derive from a first incursion into its website , and of its curious and interesting history that is found on two other pages: one and the other . Here are a few of the many data that can result from this public information: The current Bekaert empire was created in 1880 by Leo Leander Bekaert, in Zwevwgwm -Belgium-, inventor of a 6-point wire spiked crown. Today its President is Jürgen Tinggrem, Swede, and its CEO Oswald Schmid, Austrian. He successfully navigated through both world wars. Today it has business activities in: metals (steel wire in particular), automobile, construction, energy, agriculture, equipment,… According to its 2022 report, it has 26,980 workers , with 75 production centers in 43 countries , Turkey being one of them.
