Here's a thread for sharing all our current and potential doll-involved ideas and activities. Not just purchases, but anything ideas you're had recently or what you've done lately to your dolls that doesn't seem like such a big deal but would be fun to share!
Aside from that, we can share tips and tricks on how to do different things. I know a couple of you guys are really good at body-swaps, re-rooting, face-painting and taking pictures, so we can talk about those here too.
Personally I've always been into making (hand-sewing) my own doll clothes. When the Fashionista Kens were on the more posed body I liked making them sweats because I thought they looked really good. I always want to get back into it, so maybe this will act as some motivation!
Some tips I have for sewing include:
- Material is practically everywhere. Dolls, in the grand scheme of things, are pretty small, so even the tiniest scraps of fabric will be a big help!
- When starting out I recommend practicing on something stretchy just so you can get the feel of it before you graduate to more "real" fabrics that will have to settle properly once you're done and therefore won't be as forgiving. Old socks that no longer have a match are a good starting point.
- If you want somewhere to keep your pins and needles while working that is tactile, stick some soft fabric or other cushioning on a piece of slightly stiffer fabric, fold it in half so it sandwiches the softer bit, and sew all around the exposed sides. Instant pincushion!
- Use a gosh-darned thimble. You will get tired or lose your focus, and by the tenth time you prick yourself you won't care how awkward the metal armor is on your finger.
- If you need something to hold whilst you work, tiny clothes pegs or folder clips can be your second pair of hands to hold things together.
- If it seems like your thread is having a hard time going through something, dip it in some beeswax and wipe it off. It makes things easier.
